Abstract
The exhibition Holdings: Refiguring the Archive celebrates the launch of the University of the Witwatersrand’s graduate seminar series Refiguring the Archive. Arising out of the seminar series, the exhibition engages with issues that these seminars probe: questions of authority, the storing and transmission of knowledge, intellectual control. At the same time, the exhibition, even in its naming (Holdings . . .), also seeks to raise questions around value, desire, possession. What and why do we hoard, catalogue, covet, exclude and authenticate? The exhibition aims, then, to foreground the psychological dimensions of the ostensibly intellectual projects associated with archival procedures.
