Abstract

Frequently, the aim of social research is to find answers to questions concerning various attitudes, character traits, opinions, general characteristics of individuals or social groups. In such questions reference is often made to such concepts as religious strictness, modernity of attitude, tolerance of deviance, alienation, frustration, authoritarian personality, social status, effectiveness of communication within a social group, low (high) morale in an individual or in a social group. Many more examples could be quoted without difficulty. If we consider such concepts more closely, we find two characteristics which they have in common and which are of great methodological importance.
