Abstract
Technology transfer in Canada is presented as a communications process functioning among the various agencies managing the Canadian forest. Most of the forest land in Canada is provincially owned and provincial forestry agencies traditionally have played a key role in the dissemination of technology to forest managers. The federal mandate is to promote the development and protection of the forest and provide scientific and technical leadership. Disease and insect studies have always been a prominent part of the federal research program. Detection and assessment of pest problems are a part of the Canadian Forestry Service program and personnel of pest survey units distributed across the country provide a transfer link between researchers and forest managers.
The evolution of the current strategy for management of Scleroderris canker as caused by the North American race of Gremmeniella abietina is presented to illustrate how technology transfer has functioned in Canada. Incursions of the European race of G. abietina are currently treated by quarantine procedures. Technology transfer has made forest managers and the general public aware of the potential of this pest through publicity released to the news media, articles in various forestry publications, and a series of workshops held to discuss the potential of this pest and train foresters to recognize the problem.
