Abstract

Cosmic ray research has been viewed as a key to the initiation and development of hypernuclear physics. A retrospect of the early stages of hypernuclear studies is presented. Main steps in the development of hypernuclear physics are recollected and confronted with the progressing understanding of the elementary particle problems at that time. Some information about the continuation of the hypernuclear studies carried out with the aid of artificially constructed beams is also presented.
