Abstract

The history to be related in this article is concerned with the discovery of the principal strange particles in cosmic rays starting with the work on the so-called ‘penetrating showers’ in 1938 and ending with the advent of the great accelerators. It is only part of the wider history of what may with some justice be termed the second vintage period of cosmic ray particle physics covering roughly the years 1947–54 when the whole field of sub-atomic particle physics was opened up by a series of remarkable discoveries at the Powell School of Cosmic Ray Physics at Bristol University and the Blackett School at Manchester University.
