Abstract

This essay presents a brief history of certain research into the nuclear-physical aspect of cosmic rays which was performed, on the whole, before 1960 by the scientific school of Academician D.V.Skobeltzyn (in the main, at the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Soviet Academy of Sciences on high mountains). Other such research is touched upon briefly, only so far as it has been stimulated by its inkage to the described work.
