Abstract
Since the 1970s, surgeons have been aware of the emergence of a syndrome which is characterized by significant dysfunction of more than two organ systems, subsequent to serious traumas, prolonged and extensive operations, major burns, or systemic infections. This syndrome has been named ‘multi-system organ failure’ by many investigators1. We have reviewed retrospectively all burn patients who manifested clinical pictures indicative of this syndrome and who were admitted to our burn service in the past 10 years, in an attempt to analyze its causative factors and to work out measures for its prevention.
