Refrigerated Human Amnion as a Burn Dressing: Clinical Application and Histologic Observations

Abstract

Human amniotic membrane has been shown to be an effective biologic dressing both clinically and experimentally. This biodressing may (1) alleviate pain, (2) minimize evaporative and exudative losses and (3) prevent further contamination of the wound, with resultant accelerated healing1–4. In animal experiments5, bacterial counts decreased in virtually all infected burn wounds treated either with allogenic skin or human amniotic membrane. However, the degree of decreased bacterial counts was a thousandfold greater with amniotic membrane.
