The Methodology of Open-Field Fumigation

Summary

Field fumigation systems are designed to determine the effects of increased pollutant concentrations on the development, growth and economic yield of agricultural crops. They offer improved simulation of field growing conditions and ambient pollutant exposure than either controlled environment or open-top chamber experiments. Nevertheless there are many ways in which such field fumigation can fail to meet its design objectives. The main ways - pollutant time variations, spatial homogeneity, continuity and statistical validity - are examined in more detail and the implications for the design and interpretation of such experiments are discussed.
