Effects of H2 O2 -Containing Acidic Fog on Young Trees

Summary

Intercepted clouds and fog are considered to play an important role in the forest die-back. As a result, there is a growth of the number of plant effect studies in which fog is involved. Most of these experiments suffer from some shortcomings in that sense that:

  1. a.

    acidity is considered to be the only damaging factor,

  2. b.

    most exposure-chambers are not suited to operate at 100% relative humidity, leading to substantial changes in the chemical composition of the fog, due to condensation or evaporation.

The experiments presented in this paper were set up with the intention to give a realistic simulation of the physics and chemistry. Along with the description of the exposure facility, some results of experiments in which young trees were exposed to hydrogen peroxide-containing fog are presented. Experiments have shown microscopical changes in the tissue of plants that are exposed to sub-ppm levels of H2 O2 in fog, during six weeks.
