Abstract
From clinical experience we know that inhalational anesthetics change heart rate and rhythm. Investigations concerning these changes study three different levels of effects of anesthetics on cardiac conduction. One type of investigation studies the effects of anesthetic agents in a single type of heart cell, the second type looks at the isolated heart preparation, and the third type observes the intact animal. All three types of studies are necessary in order to understand how changes in cardiac rate and rhythm occur in our anesthetized patients.
