Abstract
Before the introduction of intensive high dose chemotherapy, adjuvant treatment did not seem feasible for osteosarcoma with the known chemotherapeutic agents. The metastatic rate for tumors in the limbs was as high as 70% in the first year after definitive surgery and practically all these metastases were situated in the lungs. In Marcove’s material (8), a bone lesion as first metastasis occurred only in 6% of the total group. In Cohen’s review (6) of the Dutch Bone Tumour Committee material, 24/167 = 13% of cases, developed bone metastases, but only in three patients they were not accompanied by lung lesions. It is then logical to investigate the possibilities of radiotherapy to the lungs as a locally directed adjuvant treatment.
