Large-Scale Accretion Flows in AGN

Abstract

A two stage mechanism for fueling AGN is proposed which makes use of stellar dynamical and gas dynamical instabilities. The first stage adopts different forms depending on the type of host galaxy. In spiral hosts a stellar bar sweeps the interstellar material inward as a consequence of the gas losing angular momentum to the bar. In elliptical galaxies the first stage is likely to be infall. In a second stage common to both types of host, the gaseous disk accumulated in the nuclear region of the galaxy goes bar unstable again and the material flows further in. Some observational and theoretical implications of this picture are discussed.
