VLA Observations of Recombination Lines from the Star Burst Galaxy NGC253

Abstract

NGC253 was observed in H166α, H110α, and H92α recombination-lines using the C and D configurations of VLA1. Lines were detected in the nuclear region, which also dominates the continuum emission. The spatial location of the H166α line is different from that of the other two. We suggest that the higher frequency lines arise in high density and high emission measure gas, and the lower frequency line in a region of low density and lower emission measure. The observed velocity distribution indicate unusual motions of the ionized gas near the nucleus.
