Abstract

VLA maps of Cas A in the carbon recombination line C270α are compared with maps of neutral hydrogen 21 cm absorption and various molecular species to see whether there is any similarity. Single dish observations of line strength as a function of principal quantum number n have suggested models in which the carbon lines originate in molecular clouds colder than 20 K or in neutral clouds as warm as 50–100 K. The general features of the warm model are discussed. The recombination line maps more closely resemble the neutral hydrogen maps, suggesting that the warm model is the correct one.
