Abstract

We present the discovery of maser emission in radio recombination lines at wavelengths between 1 and 2 mm towards MWC349. The maser emission takes off for radio recombination lines with quantum numbers smaller than 36. For larger quantum numbers, the line intensities are consistent with thermal emission from an isothermal ionized stellar wind expanding at constant velocity. Like most of the molecular line masers, the radio recombination line maser shows strong time variability. From the variability of the radio recombination lines near 1 mm we estimate a brightness temperature larger than 106 K.
