Il diabete mellito è una sindrome endocrino-metabolica caratterizzata da iperglicemia secondaria ad un deficit assoluto o relativo di insulina (quest’ultimo spesso associate ad insulino-resistenza); ne consegue una marcata alterazione del ricambio (glicidico, protidico, lipidico e idrosalino) che si associa ad una tipica microangiopatia evidente soprattutto a livello retinico e renale [1].
