La presenza sulle emazie fetali di antigeni che la madre non possiede può dar luogo ad un processo di immunizzazione nel caso in cui si abbia il passaggio di eritrociti fetali nel circolo materno. Poiché in questo caso gli antigeni derivano da individui della stessa specie si parla di “alloimmunizzazione”; intendendo, invece, per isoimmunizzazione quella che si verifica tra individui non solo della stessa specie, ma che abbiano anche un’uguale costituzione genetica (gemelli monozigoti).
