Abstract

Medical records contain a wide variety of data types, including a sizable percentage in linguistic format including physician’s notes, interpretations of medical images, impressions of pathological findings, and summaries of electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram recordings. Because of the complex nature of the medical record, development of practical computer-assisted medical decision making aids has met with numerous difficulties. In this article, a number of approaches for dealing with linguistic variables are presented and illustrated in a system for decision making in cardiology.
