Abstract
The epidemic spread of HIV among heroin addicts is well documented through reports from many countries (Des Jarlais et al 1989). Needle sharing is the main route of transmission. Effective HIV prevention must target this risk behaviour. Needle exchange programmes are showing promising results in various countries (Christensson, Ljungberg 1991, Stimson et al 1988). Carefully conducted Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) has proven to be an efficient tool to prevent i.v. heroin addicts from contracting HIV (Novick et al 1988).
