Abstract

In direct integration of dynamic equilibrium equations it may be very beneficial to diagonalise a mass matrix. Despite the fact that the consistent mass matrix leads to optimal error estimates, there is a strong motivation for breaking the basic rules. In practice, diagonal or “lumped” mass matrices are often employed due to their general economy and because they lead to some especially attractive time-integration schemes (explicit methods).
