Interpretation of Gravity Low in and around Beppu Bay, Kyushu, Japan

Abstract

The region in and around Beppu Bay located in Kyushu, Japan, is characterized by gravity low and has complicated structures, as an intersection of tectonic lines. For the subsurface structures estimated by gravity analysis, we tried to discuss the mechanical formation and the tectonic history of this region by using a simple dislocation model. The results show that (1) the tectonic basins in and around Beppu Bay were pull-apart basins which were formed by right-lateral motions of the Median Tectonic Line and Kurume-Hiji Line, and (2) the half graben in Beppu Bay was unrelated to those motions and was formed before the formation of the pull-apart basin.
