Zusammenfassung

Die maschinelle Beatmung auf der Intensivstation erfolgt praktisch immer durch einen positiven Atemwegsdruck, der intermittierend oder kontinuierlich erzeugt wird. Die hierdurch hervorgerufenen unphysiologischen Druckschwankungen und -gradienten im Thoraxraum sind für den Großteil der Nebenwirkungen und Komplikationen dieser Therapie verantwortlich. Die übrigen Komplikationen sind durch Verwendung künstlicher Atemwege bedingt. Im folgenden werden die Sekundäreffekte der Beatmung auf andere Organfunktionen sowie auf das respiratorische System dargestellt.
