Abstract

In the context of HDTV studio standards with video bandwidth ranging from around 30 MHz (1125/60/2:1 and 1250/50/2:1) to around 60 MHz (1125/60/1:1 and 1250/50/1:1) the radio frequency spectrum available for HDTV broadcasting is rather limited. It is for this reason that methods of signal bandwidth compression are essential which enable the HDTV studio signal bandwidth to fit into one or two of the already planned channels in the 12 GHz direct broadcast satellite (DBS) band or into chan-nels obtained from other allocated or potential DBS bands. The maximum RF bandwidth usable e.g. in the 23 GHz band (which has not yet been allocated in region 1 to DBS services) is likely to be limited to about 50 MHz, which implies a video bandwidth of around 20 MHz.
