Abstract

One of the latest transverse-axial single-photon tomography machines is the Cleon 710 Radionuclide Brain Imager. This system was developed by Union Carbide Inc. and has been described by Stoddart and Stoddart (1). The Brain Imager comprises twelve 20 × 13 × 2.5 cm detectors with 14.5 cm focal length collimators arranged at 30 intervals around the object. Counts from a single section are recorded while each detector performs a rectilinear scan within the section of interest so that the focal point of each detector scans half the field of view. The reconstruction algorithm is based on the Radon inversion transform and is equivalent to a convolution and back-projection technique. However, due to the unique motion of the detectors, back-projection of the filtered data is not necessary.
