Vertebrobasilar Occlusion: Outcome With and Without Local Intraarterial Fibrinolysis

Thrombolytic Therapy in Acute Ischemic Stroke

Abstract

Previous studies have shown that about half of the patients treated with local intraarterial fibrinolysis (LIF) after vertebrobasilar occlusion survived without severe deficits [2, 3, 5, 6]. In one series, however, all patients had poor outcomes [4]. There may be subgroups of patients who do not benefit from LIF. We retrospectively analyzed 20 cases to delineate these subgroups. This might lead to more realistic expectations concerning LIF and to improved therapy studies.
