Cycloid and Affective Disorders: Reproduction, Motherhood, Postpartum Psychoses, and Offspring Characteristics

Abstract

Considerable demands are typically placed on a woman physically, mentally, and psychosocially throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery, the postpartum period, and early motherhood. Women with a history of serious mental disorder appear to experience especially many difficulties during this period (McNeil et al. 1983a, 1984a; McNeil 1986; Persson-Blennow et al. 1986). The question of the similarities and differences between cycloid and affective psychoses may possibly be illuminated by viewing these mental disorders within the context of the special set of conditions represented by reproduction and motherhood. Furthermore, the investigation of the early-life characteristics of the offspring of women with these psychoses may yield evidence of (dis)similarities in the effects of both genetic and environmental influences on the offspring, associated with the different types of maternal psychoses. The similarities and differences between reproducing cycloid and affective women and their offspring is the central theme of this chapter.
