Abstract

The concept of schizoaffective disorder as a distinctive diagnostic entity is controversial (Maj et al. 1987). At one time, schizoaffective disorder was viewed primarily as a variant of schizophrenia. Wellner et al. (1974, 1977, 1979) reported that patients with schizoaffective disorder have a prognosis similar to that for patients with schizophrenia. They also found no prognostic significance for affective symptoms in patients with marked schizophrenic psychopathology.
