Zusammenfassung

Die Behandlung von Depressionen stellt für Therapeuten wie Forscher eine besondere Herausforderung dar:

  1. 1)

    Wegen ihrer hohen Prävalenz: im Verlaufe ihres Lebens erkranken etwa 12% der erwachsenen Bevölkerung an Depressionen. Depressionen sind der häufigste Aufnahmegrund in psychiatrische Kliniken; ca. 10% der ambulanten Patienten in allgemeinärztlichen Praxen suchen wegen depressiver Verstimmungen um Hilfe; etwa 15–20% nehmen einen chronischen Verlauf (Heimann u. Zimmer 1987).

  2. 2)

    Wegen der Suizidgefahr: Etwa 14 000 erfolgreiche Suizide pro Jahr übersteigen die Zahl der Verkehrstoten.

  3. 3)

    Wegen der Beziehungsproblematik: Schon Freud wies 1917 darauf hin, daß das klagende Verhalten Depressiver von Angehörigen wie Therapeuten häufig als Belastung empfunden wird.
