Im Rahmen des Multiorganversagens spielt die akute, fortschreitende Insuffizienz der Atemfunktion, das „akute Lungenversagen“ (ALV) oder „Adult respiratory distress syndrome“ (ARDS), eine zentrale Rolle; unter den versagenden Vitalfunktionen ist sie bei weitem am häufigsten.
