Mit der Diagnostik der kindlichen Wahrnehmung befassen sich zahlreiche Disziplinen. Bei Augenärzten, Neurologen, Gehörlosen- und Sehbehindertenpädagogen sowie Hals-Nasen-Ohren-Ärzten steht dabei in der Regel die Prüfung der Funktionstüchtigkeit der Sinnesorgane im Vordergrund; es geht um die Feststellung von Sehfehlern und Hörschäden, andere Sinnesorgane spielen eine unterge- ordnete Rolle. Zwar muß auch bei einer solchen Funktionsprüfung der Entwicklungsstand eines Kindes berücksichtigt werden (z. B. entwicklungsabhängige Aufmerksamkeit, Schwierigkeiten im sprachlichen Verständnis und der Ausdrucksfahigkeit), und Funktionsmängel können zu Entwicklungsbeeinträchtigungen führen, der Entwicklungsstand ist selbst aber meist nicht Zielgröße.
