Zusammenfassung

Unter dem Begriff Glaukom versteht man eine Gruppe von Krankheiten, die als gemeinsames Merkmal einen derart gesteigerten Intraokulardruck aufweisen, daß die Sehnervenpapille degeneriert und das Gesichtsfeld zerfällt. Man rechnet mit etwa 50000 an Glaukom erblindeten Personen in den USA. Die Häufigkeit des Glaukoms beträgt bei einer nicht selektionierten Gruppe von Personen über 40 Jahren etwa 1,5%.
