Abstract
There is a growing feeling of dissatisfaction with the methods used to screen compounds for activity against arthritic diseases in man. In 1968, Spector and Willoughby alluded to “the temptation to select the present, inadequate drugs, design tests that give positive results and then with the aid of these tests to search for further compounds giving positive results. Such methodology may lead only to ‘old’ antiinflammatory agents instead of ‘new’.” More recently, Paulus and Whitehouse (1973) pointed out the lack of any breakthrough in the search for drugs to be used in the treatment of human arthritic disease.
