Abstract

The plant cuticle is a lipid membrane that covers all above-ground organs of the Spermatophyta and Pteridophyta (Esau, 1969). The thalli of certain members of the Hepaticeae are likewise covered by a cuticle (Schönherr and Ziegler, 1975). Since the cell walls of the intercellular air spaces are also lined with a cuticle (Ursprung, 1925; Scott, 1950), it would appear that in the above plant species a cuticle is generally formed at all plant-air interfaces.
