Zusammenfassung

Der Begriff Prostatitis repräsentiert nicht eine nosologische Einheit, sondern umschreibt eine Reihe entzündlicher und nichtentzündlicher Zustände, die die Prostata betreffen. Basierend auf einer semiquantitativen Lokalisationstechnik für Bakterien (Meares u. Stamey 1968), wurde 1978 ein Klassifikationssystem entwickelt (Drach et al. 1978), um eine echte Entzündung von nichtentzündlichen Erkrankungen der Prostata abgrenzen zu können. Da bis heute jedoch die komplexen Aspekte prostatischer Erkrankungen, insbesondere der „abakteriellen Prostatitis“und der Prostatodynie nicht vollständig verstanden sind, wird dieser Klassifizierungsvorschlag in Zukunft sicher noch Verbesserungen erfahren (Übersicht in Nickel 1998). Allerdings hat die systematische Unterscheidung des Prostatitissyndroms eine differenzierte Annäherung an effektive und rationale Therapieansätze ermöglicht, die wichtige ätiopathogenetische Aspekte des Prostatitissyndroms berücksichtigt.
