Abstract

Resident tissue macrophages are ideally placed for a role in the first line of defence against invading viruses and other microorganisms. Binding of viruses to macrophages can occur via a variety of molecules including the direct use of proteins, lipids and oligosaccharides as receptors, as well as opsonic recognition of viruses by the macrophage. Often multiple surface components are involved in virus-macrophage interactions, and interestingly a number of lectin receptors are expressed on macrophages for which viral ligands have been proposed. This review focuses on the initial viral attachment to macrophages and describes the interactions of certain macrophage lectin, proteoglycan and Toll-like receptors with viruses. The study of the role of pattern recognition receptors in the macrophage response to viruses may reveal new features of viral pathogenesis and some of the interactions could provide targets for antiviral agents.
