Rheumatoid Arthritis Foot Reconstruction: Forefoot, Midfoot, and Ankle Hindfoot

Abstract

  1. 1.

    Although the paradigm shift of medical treatment for rheumatoid arthritis has resulted in a change in the types of surgeries performed and reduced the overall amount of operations, the number of foot surgeries performed has conversely increased. However, the types of procedures for the foot and ankle have changed.

  2. 2.

    Forefoot: Joint preservation surgeries, such as metatarsal osteotomies, have become more popular, even for severe deformities.

  3. 3.

    Midfoot: Partial tarsal arthrodeses are recommended for patients with limitations in their daily life caused by pain.

  4. 4.

    Hindfoot: Arthroscopic synovectomy is recognized once again. Several designs of total ankle prostheses, including total talar prostheses, are available for end-stage rheumatoid arthritis of the ankle.
