Abstract
Based on 31 provinces’ panel data of the imported animal genetic resources from 1996 to 2010, this paper intends to achieve two goals. The first one is to examine the temporal changes and trends of China’s genetic resources import since 1996. As a whole, the import of animal genetic resources shows a clearly rising trend but the import fluctuation of different breeds varies in different extent. The other goal is to determine the factors that have contributed to the above changes. An ANCOVA model is built and the result shows that domestic consumption demand, technological progress and supportive policy contribute to the import expansion of livestock and poultry. While the live animal supply from breeding farms has a statistically negative impact on the livestock and poultry import. Therefore, through the increasing supply of livestock and poultry from breeding farms, China can have less reliance on or even get rid of the imported breeds during the development of animal husbandry in the future.
