Recent Studies of Slot-Blowing Techniques for Vortex Control on Slender Configurations

Summary

Three experimental studies of pneumatic (slot blowing) concepts of vortical and 3-dimensional separation control to improve the aerodynamics of slender configurations are described: (a) High-alpha LEX blowing for post-stall lateral control; (b) Delta wing vortex lift augmentation for slower landing; and (c) Tip stall control on crank-arrow planform for pitch-up alleviation and lateral control. Low-speed tunnel flow visualizations, and pressure/force/moment measurements on generic models are presented in support of the concepts and to demonstrate their aerodynamic potential.
