Abstract

In Raman and Brillouin scattering of photons by phonons, the frequency of the scattered radiation differs from that of the incident radiation by the frequency of the phonons. From an empirical point of view, the two types of scattering differ only in that optical phonons are involved in Raman scattering and that acoustical modes are involved in Brillouin scattering. In both phenomena, the intensity of the scattered radiation depends on the change in the electronic polarizability (or susceptibility) of the crystal which is induced by the phonons.
