Saturation of the Uptake of Noradrenaline as a Determinant of Pharmacological Effects

Abstract

Intraneuronal uptake is responsible for the removal of 1-noradrenaline from the fluid perfusing isolated rabbit hearts (Lindmarand Muscxoll, 1964). In this species, the uptake mechanism is characterized by lacking stereospecificity and by being saturable; however, in spite of the lack of stereospecificity, the rate of uptake of d-noradrenaline is lower than that of the 1-isomer when the heart is perfused with a concentration of the amine (200 ng/ml) that causes partial saturation of uptake (DraskÓczy and Trendelenburg, 1968).
