Zusammenfassung

Wie jede Naturwissenschaft begann auch die Astrophysik notwendigerweise mit der Sammlung und empirischen Klassifikation ihres Beobachtungsmaterials. Nachdem 1815 J. Fraunhofer mit ganz behelfsmäßigen Einrichtungen die Spektren einiger Sterne beobachtet und ihre Unterschiede bemerkt hatte, klassifizierte A. Secchi fast 4000 Sterne nach vier Spektraltypen. Sodann sollten wir die wichtigen Arbeiten von W. Huggins, N. Lockyer und H. C. Vogel erwähnen.
