Multimedia Session Reconfiguration for Mobility-Aware QoS Management: Use Cases and the Functional Model

Abstract

Evolution of communication networks envisages providing mobile users with seamless Quality of Service (QoS) support. This paper presents a session reconfiguration approach that dynamically manages QoS for multimedia services in response to session mobility and terminal mobility. It considers changes (referred to as events) that are induced by mobility and utilizes those affecting QoS to steer the session reconfiguration. As the result, basic operations, called reconfiguration primitives, are applied to maintain or adapt QoS. Use cases that illustrate motivation for this work are described, along with the proposed functional model. An initial performance evaluation of the model is also outlined.
