Abstract
Histiocytoses are a group of diseases characterized by abnormal proliferation and multiorgan infiltration by histiocytes. Different diseases and clinical presentations fall under the umbrella of histiocytoses.
Histiocytes are bone marrow-derived cells, and they fall into two main groups: the mononuclear phagocytes (macrophages) and dendritic cells. Macrophages are part of the immune system, and their main function is to engulf bacteria and damaged tissues (phagocytosis). They are found in all body organs like the liver (Kupffer cells), brain (microglial cells), etc. In contrast, dendritic cells are a cell family that includes Langerhans cells, interdigitating reticulum cells, and follicular dendritic cells. They are found in the reticuloendothe-lial system, and their main function is to activate the major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-restricted T-cells by expressing high levels of MHC class II molecules. The reticuloendothelial system includes the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes.
