Zusammenfassung

Ein Patient wird mit schwerer Lungenentzündung in die Intensivstation eingeliefert. Die mikrobiologische Abklärung ergibt eine Infektion mit dem Erreger Pneumocystis carinii, einem sonst eher harmlosen Erreger. Die weitere Diagnostik deckt auf, dass der Patient unter HIV-induzierter Immunschwäche leidet. Wenige Tage später stirbt der Patient an der Lungenentzündung. Ursache für die hohe Infektanfälligkeit von HIV-Patienten ist ein Defekt der T-Lymphozyten, die das gesamte Immunsystem regulieren. Der Patient kann deswegen selbst normalerweise harmlose Erreger nicht mehr abwehren.
