Abstract
The purpose of this introductory lecture is not to report on the “state of the art” in Material Science, but, less ambitiously, to browse through this very broad field to point out some important problems or even some present impasses.Such impasses are actually not always so easy to identify-nevertheless there are a few important ones, where our knowledge has been for many years at a standstill, waiting for new ideas, or new experimental techniques which will allow new advances.
