Abstract

Macpherson’s use of democratic models is employed to contrast the ‘possessive-individualist city’ with the ‘developmental-democratic city.’ Themes addressed regarding the possessive-individualist city include gentrification and homelessness; global city rankings; ‘creative cities’; erosion of social services and public spaces within cities; and an urban consumerist ethos. Core features of a developmental-democratic model include retrieval of common property; robust urban citizenship; and an urban vision combining individualism and communalism.
