Abstract
Globally, droughts, sea level rise, and coastal water degradation are the main challenges facing coastal communities. Knowledge of their vulnerability is, therefore, a prerequisite to adequately respond to their immediate needs, especially in developing countries, in order to adapt to climate change as well as mitigate the damage already done. This regional vulnerability assessment of coastal communities examined climate change and its impacts on coastal waters and considered the adequacy of social conditions of communities to adapt to coastal water degradation. Results showed that medium hydrological droughts were frequent in past decades in this catchment and its impacts are relatively higher on water resources in urbanized areas where water demands are higher. These impacts are however superimposed on existing non-climatic stressors. Furthermore, coastal communities are sensitive to resource degradation with high dependence on coastal waters to satisfy daily water needs and sustenance. Communities demonstrated high willingness to participate in government-led programs geared toward restoration and conservation of coastal resources. Therefore, little coercion would be needed to instill the desired behavioral changes and sensitize these communities on the need to protect these declining water resources through sustainable and conservative water practices. The provision of pipe-borne water and improved sanitation facilities will be crucial elements in addressing the objectives of water resource conservation, livelihood enhancement, and minimization of risks associated with climate change.
