Abstract
The chapter assessed the biodiversity, ecosystem degradation, and climate change effects on livelihood of fisherfolks in the bitumen area of Ondo State, Nigeria. The chapter was geographically limited to Agbabu in Ondo state, Nigeria, where bitumen was discovered over a hundred years. The chapter examined the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents, livelihood diversification of the respondents, extent of degradation of the ecosystem, and effects of bitumen exploration on flora, fauna, and cultivated plants in the study area. Both primary and secondary data were used in the chapter. Multistage sampling techniques were used to select the study area and the number of respondents. The result of the socioeconomic characteristics revealed that 53% of the respondents were female. Forty-two percent of the respondents forecasted that the vegetation will be densely populated, while 20% of the respondents forecasted total degradation of habitat and vegetation. All the respondents indicated that the study area is under future threat of climate change. The chapter therefore recommended that government should intervene in the exploitation of bitumen in the area and sensitized the residences which are mainly the fisherfolks on the adverse effect in the nearest future if the misuse of the bitumen continues in the area.
