Abstract
This introductory chapter engages with several key themes of the volume and how the case studies in the collection connect with them, including the interpretation of history in modern media, the repetition of stories, the intertemporal nature of film and fiction, the creation of communities and borders in the past, and the dangers of presentism. Intensive discussion is given to the depiction of gender and sexual ideologies in the films, television series, and novels featured in the book and the various strategies employed by producers of media to reconcile the gap between premodern and postmodern ideas and societal values.
